Lunch can be learning experience
LUNCH BUNCH
Two can eat out for less than $20
You get a sense of arrival at the new Mori Hosseini Center on the campus of Daytona Beach Community College. Natural lighting, earth-tone colors and a coffee bar create a feeling of sophistication. You might think you’re checking into a posh hotel in a much larger city than Daytona Beach.
Fortunately, there is a restaurant and a museum to give nonstudents and nonfaculty an excuse to visit. Staff writer Jim Haug recently had lunch at Cafe 101 with his wife, Amber Dees, online staffer.
Q. What is Cafe 101?
Just as there are teaching hospitals and teaching airports for doctors and pilots in training, this is a teaching restaurant for apprentice chefs. The mood here is nice and relaxed. If there are any novice chef meltdowns — the stuff of reality shows like “Hell’s Kitchen” — the drama is kept behind the kitchen doors.
Q. How was the dining
room?
The patterned carpet and pink carnations made us think of a standard convention hotel next to an interstate on-ramp. The decor was disappointing because the rest of the building has so much style. We think the students’ imagination could be unleashed a bit in decorating the place.
Q. Let’s get to the food. What did you eat first?
Because we love avocados, we were delighted the salad came with a creamy avocado vinaigrette. The greens tasted garden fresh, too. Amber said a cherry tomato was the “best tomato in my life.” We also enjoyed the hot dinner rolls.
Q. And the main course?
Amber selected the grilled salmon, which she described as “moist and super buttery.” It was served over rice, which tasted lukewarm and mushy, a little overcooked.
Ever the trouble-creating vegetarian, Jim got a veggie stew that was not on the menu. It was a melange of chopped cauliflower, carrots and potatoes. Fresh herbs gave the stew some spice.
Q. What about dessert?
We were so stuffed we had put our cheesecake and chocolate fruit cup in a box to go. They made a nice treat for later in the afternoon.
Q. What did this feast
cost?
The cost conscious should be aware the meal is price fixed at $9, and the menu is limited to two options per course. The bargain seems to attract a largely older clientele.
Q. Would you recommend
it?
The food was good for the price. We also like that Cafe 101 is across the hall from the Southeast Museum of Photography. If you have time, the pairing of restaurant and museum is well worth an extended lunch break.
